The demand to best serve and education youth with moderate to severe disabilities is supported through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This unique student population was once denied access to a public school education; therefore life outcomes were negativity impacted. Through the support of parents, advocacy groups, and the government students with moderate to severe disabilities are now entitled to a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. IDEA opens the door for opportunities regarding cognitive, adaptive, social and emotional progression. There has been much debate regarding best practices for educating this exceptional student population. Current trends in education promote the need to provide inclusive educational opportunities for students with disabilities (SWD), as research shows SWD’s acquire essential social skills and communication abilities (Ryndak, Ward, Alper, Montgomery & Storch, 2010; Signor-Buhl Leblanc, & Mcdougal, 2006). There is limited research pertaining to SWD who exhibit moderate to severe deficits (Kelinert et al. 2015). Although there has been a decrease in self-contained educational placement for SWD, this population can still be served in segregated classroom (Williamson, Mcleskey, Hoppey & Rentez, 2006).
