“Edgar Allan Poe” The name Edgar Allan Poe brings to mind the images of murderers and madmen. Also, it brings to mind premature burials and mysterious women who have returned from the dead. What most people do not know, however, is that he is widely known as the inventor of the modern detective story and is known as the innovator of the science fiction genre. While all of this is true, Poe ended up making a living as America’s first great literary critic and theoretician. However, some of the things we have heard about Poe are not true. Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston Massachusetts. His parents were David Poe and Elizabeth Arnold Poe. Poe’s father left the family not too long after Poe was born. His mother died of tuberculosis while she was in Richmond, Virginia during December 1811 when she was twenty-four years old. This sudden death caused Poe to be warped for the rest of his life. After his mother died, Poe was put into the home of John and Frances Allan. His brother and sister ended up at different houses when their mother died. The Allan’s were childless, so they treated Poe as if he were their only son even though they never fully adopted him. They sent him to private schools during 1815 in New England. Things started out great between Poe and his foster parents. Mrs. Allan would always dole on him. However, that quickly deteriorated as Poe started to feel more insecure and estranged from his classmates because he had a lowly origin. He became more…
