Eating disorders are not a lifestyle, they are a life threatening mental illness that can be devastating to the body and mind. They are most prominent in first world countries because of media and the idea of the perfect male or female figure. The constant pressure and fear of judgement is so great that it drives people to the point where they refuse to eat and take care of themselves. The fact that female and male models are constantly starving themselves to have the “ideal body” is most often times outrageous. The most common three eating disorders that people suffer from is Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge Eating.
Anorexia Nervosa is a serious eating disorder and mental disorder that occurs when a person in great distress feels the need to starve themselves to gain control in their life. Anorexia is the most common psychiatric diagnoses in young women(“What Causes” CED), however a small minority of young men suffer from this disorder as well. “Approximately 90% - 95% of Anorexia sufferers are girls and women” and “.05% - 1% of American women suffer from this disorder”. Sadly “5% - 20% of the people diagnosed with Anorexia die, these death rates are the highest of any mental health condition” (NEDA “Anorexia Nervosa”).
The causes of Anorexia are mainly unknown and very vague, but scientists have linked genetics, trauma, coping with depression, society, and severe depression (“What Causes” CED). One way that scientists have discovered that Anorexia is caused is through…
