The scientific research that has been occurring over the past fifty years has led to a great amount of information that is now known about dyslexia and it nature, etiology, and assessment (Snowling, 2013). The International Dyslexia Association describes Dyslexia as “…one of several distinct learning disabilities. It is a specific language-based disorder… (Culberston, 2012)” The neurodevelopmental and heritable disorder is also known as a “reading disability.” Dyslexia is s a lifelong condition that affects fundamental areas in language. In addition to reading difficulties, other difficulties include writing, spelling, and oral communication. It is important to note that dyslexia is not a problem with intelligence, rather a problem with the domains of language (Culberston, 2012). In the Texas dyslexia program, students who were diagnosed with dyslexia had above-average IQs, which results in the child being place into regular education with an additional class for dyslexia intervention (Culberston, 2012). Statistically, dyslexia is estimated to range from 3% to 10% depending on the criteria used to diagnosis dyslexia (Snowling, 2013). With that being said, finding a definition if dyslexia is important in the search for determining the proper methods for intervention and the appropriate accommodations for a child with dyslexia (Culberston, 2012).
