This is a vast difference. Decisions for the group are made by a board of director mechanism and not by one person (a single leader) unlike most cartels. This gives the operation flexibility to continue to thrive despite several setbacks. For example, in 2008 a piece of the Sinaloa cartel broke off into the Beltran Leyva Organization (BLO) and started to wage war with it’s father cartel. Also, in 2014, Chapo Guzman, a multibillion dollar architect and criminal business visionary was arrested in Mazatlan. Despite these major setbacks, Sinaloa made new alliances and expanded even further. The Sinaloa are now active in seventeen Mexican states and throughout parts of the United States. They also have connections all the way in Australia. They were founded in 2010 by Servando Gomez Martinez. Martinez is an ex-high-ranking member of the nearly extinct La Familia Michoacana, but he left the organization after its leader was killed. As a splinter group of the La Familia, the Knights Templar employ similar strategies and trappings. They are a “self-defense” movement against the other cartels on behalf of the indigenous population of Michoacana state. The Knights Templar has also made use of ritualistic killings and the dismemberment of its enemies in an effort to stop resistance.
However, their methods have backfired. This is because these methods were brutal. A popular vigilante revolt, sanctioned by the Mexican government, effectively pushed the Knights Templar from areas across the state. Rival cartels joined in the effort eager for a chance to help eliminate of the their rivals.
The Gulf Cartel was founded in the region of eastern Mexico along the Gulf coast states, and started receiving considerable success and infamy in 1984 when it associated with the Colombian Cali cartel.
