Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria (December 1, 1949 – December 2, 1993) was a notorious Colombian drug lord who, paradoxically, was both a ruthless Machiavellian despot and a national hero. At the height of his career his cartel supplied an estimated 80% of the cocaine smuggled into the United States.[1][2] Often called "The King of Cocaine", he was the wealthiest criminal in history, with an estimated known net worth of US$30 billion by the early 1990s, and approximately US$100 billion when including money that was buried in different places throughout Colombia.[3] He was also one of the top ten richest men in the world at his…

On July 2, 2007, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, a drug lord and the most wanted man in Mexico, reportedly married a woman from La Angostura, Durango, in a public ceremony. Though already married twice, Guzmán fell in love with eighteen-year-old Emma Coronel—described by a reporter as being white skinned and having a well-formed body—who had recently been named queen of the 2007 Coffee and Guava Fair (Dávila 2007b, 7). Emma had met Chapo at a village dance. Before he arrived at the wedding, a small army of heavily armed, masked, and black-clad bodyguards on 200 two-seater all-terrain motorcycles took over the town in what must have appeared like a scene out of a James Bond movie. While the bodyguards protected all ten entrances to the village,…

El Chapo a hero or a Villain? Why is it that many Mexicans and, in particular, Sinaloenses (Mexican’s that originate from the state of Sinaloa) mystify the figure of Chapo Guzman? Why is it that a high percentage of them resented his capture and celebrated his escape? In a recent survey that was conducted by Univision (a very respected and trusted source of Hispanic news), they asked Sinaloenses; "With whom would you associate el Chapo with?” and the vast majority responded with characters from the Mexican revolution or the Mexican independence (e.g. Pancho Villa) to them this man is more than a hero, he is a sign of hope a paisa robin hood a man that steals from the rich and gives to the poor he is a sign of hope and prosperity for many he is a folk hero to many people idolize this man so much that he is considered a saint in his home state of…

I have mixed feelings about Vincent’s idea of Guzman being too cocky because although he was careless, he may have cheated his way through the government system. In my view, El Chapo’s cockiness in thinking he were untouchable led to his downfall. In addition, his large amounts of money may have also allowed him to bribe workers in the government to help him escape. Some might object to the government system allowing him to escape many times, of course, on the grounds that the government was established to enforce justice. Yet I would argue that someone of his high position in criminal hierarchy has the ability to manipulate that system.…
