Drugs are all around the world, everyone knows of someone who is suffering from drug addiction. This is sad but true. It may be a co-worker, friend, family, or an old friend, but we all know of someone. Most people focus on the addicted individual, but in most cases the drug addiction is affecting more than just the addict. When someone is addicted to drugs it is more than likely affecting the entire family and everyone around them. Since everyone focuses more on the addict I would like to focus on the family. This paper is going to discuss what drug addiction is, give the facts on how drugs affect the family, how the family can be helped, how many families are affected by drug abuse, signs a family member can look for when they think another family member is becoming addicted and ways to prevent drug addiction. According to Understanding Drug Abuse and Addiction (2012), drug addiction is a chronic, usually relapsing brain disease that causes uncontrollable drug seeking and use, despite the dangerous consequences the addicted individual will have and how it will affect the people around them. The decision to take drugs is mostly the persons own decision, but the brain changes over time and will challenge an addicted person’s self-control and mess with someone’s ability to resist taking drugs.
