Family Relationships with Addicts The topic I choose is Substance Abuse in this area I find Alcohol and Other Drugs Abuse and Dependence Affects Family Relationship most interested. I have lived to see this with my own eyes throughout my family while growing. It is something that has touched and changed me forever. Alcohol and substance abuse destroys families in so many ways than you may think. The “eight themes that characterize families with substance abuse dependences” (Kirst-Ashman) has really opened my eyes because I never knew about these eight characteristics until this class. That each one is what my family has faced and still facing with another family member. My family and I have lost two family members to substance abuse and alcohol. That’s on my father’s side two of his brothers one in 2006 to a gunshot wound to the head over drug deal gone wrong. His substance of choice was crack. The other brother substance of choice was alcohol over time he developed cancer in his mouth that took over his body within no time that was in 2009. My family is still dealing with this issue from another brother of my father.
