Oil drilling is hard on the environment. The oil fields are not habitable, therefore there is a loss of habitat for the animals in the area. There will also be an increase of people, which also takes away from the habitat. Additionally, transporting oil has had devastating effects on the environment due to oil spills. They do not happen all the time, but when they do happen, there are years needed for recovery. Even if a pipeline were to be created, there is still the possibility of the pipe leaking into the environment, and that would mean seeping into the ground and potentially contaminating the water. All of these are examples of what can happen directly, but there are many indirect damages that can be created due to oil drilling. An increase in air pollution is one.
All in all, the possibility of oil drilling in the Arctic has the potential to cause an increase in financial gain within the economy. Drilling in the Arctic would lower the cost of fuel by keeping the oil domestic. The drilling will create many jobs for many people of many backgrounds. Oil drilling, as it has shown to be, affects the environment a great deal. For the Arctic oil drilling to be worth the risk, there would need to be precautions in place to protect the environment.
