By definition, domestic violence can be defined as a pattern or abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power or control over another intimate partner. According to the United States Department of Justice, domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions. Although domestic violence exists within all cultures and ethnicities, in the United States today, South Carolina is ranked first among states for women murdered by men this according to the Violence Policy Center. The South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (SCCADVASA) works to provide a safe haven for women who are trapped within these types of relationships in order to alleviate some of the physical, emotional, sexual, and psychological trauma they endure. This paper is an overview of the SCCADVASA mission, history, the wide range of services they provided, and how the organization has impacted the lives of women who have fallen victims to domestic violence.
The mission of SCCADVASA “is to end domestic violence and sexual assault in South Carolina by influencing public policy, advocating for social change and building capacity of member programs, organizations and communities across the state.
