The structure being used in this case is the “specialty team” structure or better put this is the structure they intended to implement, however each person “designated” to particular sections had individual set of values that clashes with this structures ideal function. Also at play is the fact that the curators were outside players who were not aware or much interested in understanding the structures and perspectives of the museum staff and the same lack of interest in communicating can be said for the museum staff. In order for the “Specialty team” structure to work there would need to be a level of trust among the team members as well as clear understandings of responsibilities and accountability.

How does a “community practice” set up tensions in groups?
“Communities of Practice” influence our identities, practices, values and the meaning we ascribe to different situations both personal and professional. When differing communities of practice are made to interact with one another and are not managed well the differences in ideas and values can sometimes create situations of tension such as opposing ideas of roles, responsibilities, hierarchical order, goals and outcomes.
While a certain level of tension within a group can be useful to foster creativity, learning and honing of communication skills it is important that the team has a clear understanding of their own roles as well as the roles of other team members.
