Does Literature Pose An Argumentative Analysis

Do you believe that literature pose an argument? I strongly believe that literature can make an argument. Each literature make a different argument some address big and other small issues. Two pieces of literature that caught my attention were the short story “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid and the music video “Testify” by Common. They both try to prove an argument about gender especially how women are underestimate in society. In the short story “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, the author provides the leader with a conversation between a mother and a daughter. The argument that the author shows is how women are underestimate, even my someone from the same sex. The mother in this case is the one underestimating her daughter by telling her what she is supposed to do as a woman and how to act. For example, the mother said “…this is how you set a table for dinner; this is how you set a table for dinner with an important guest; this is how you set a table for lunch; this is how you set a table for breakfast;” (newyorker.om/magazine/1978/06/26/girl). The author uses repetition to emphasis how the daughter should do work. Another example is when the mother said “always eat your food in such a way that it won’t turn someone else’s stomach; on Sundays try to walk like a lady and not like the slut you are so bent on becoming;” (newyorker.om/magazine/1978/06/26/girl). In other words, the mother is underestimating the daughter by telling her that if she walks a certain way she becomes a slut. …show more content…
The music video plays a important part of understanding the argument. The music video is how a man is an about to go to trial and his wife is call for questioning by the prosecutor. We can see how the wife looks shy and innocent. One of the lyrics
