After the protests against the removal of the confederate statues in Charlottesville, Mayor Mike Signer issued an emergency meeting to make a final decision whether or not to proceed with the removal, despite the unanimous agreement in favor of the removal earlier this year. Although the conclusion of the meeting was the same as before, many citizens felt reassured by the message from the governor’s spokesman, Brian Coy. The documentary What the Health? , directed by Kip Andersen, is an exposé on the pharmaceutical and meat industry, specifically showing that they have government intervention which the public is unaware of. A revealing moment in the film is at 37 minutes in, when attention is drawn to the slaughterhouses located in Duplin County, North Carolina. As noted, these slaughterhouses have poor waste disposal, with the sewage being sprayed onto fields. The filmmakers then interview locals who live near these fields. Many claim that the slaughterhouses target communities that are poverty-stricken or are of color. Although the spraying areas and these neighborhoods may have no correlation, the various claims does bring up the possibility of corruption. When considering that some companies within the meat industry receive government funding, this idea does not seem as farfetched. After all, the directors had heavily researched this topic to find this example alone; it suggests that there may be forms of corruption present in certain groups of today.
