The Importance Of Dietary Standards For Children And Adolescents

Dietary guidelines have been established by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Heart Association (AHA) for children and adolescents. Based on these guidelines, it is suggested that children between the ages of 9 and 13 consume 3 cups of milk, 5 ounces (oz) of lean meat or beans, and 1.5 cups of fruit each day. Because of physiological differences between males and female adolescents, nutrient requirements are divided by gender after the age of 9 (Grodner, Escott-Stump, & Dorner, 2016, p. 212) (Grodner et al., 2016, pg. 212). Therefore, females among this age are required to consume 1600 calories per day and males should consume 1800 calories.
It is important that a child gets taught to balance their plate as they often consume foods that lack nutrients such as sweets and fast foods, which are high in calories. For this age group, 25% to 35% of
