Paige, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your take on the Devah Pager study. There is no doubt that discrimination is still present in and out the workplace. Her results were not unsurprising when taking into consideration the myriad of other ways that African Americans are covertly discriminated against. For instance, in previous readings we learned that employers do not advertise a job opening in the newspaper or in certain black communities so as to avoid minority applicants. Therefore, I believe her study of the effects that a criminal record has on acquiring a job may not be too far from the actual statistic (if a study could ever be perfectly conducted). However, I do not believe the results extend out to other minorities. Her studies
