In society, dentistry and oral hygiene is viewed as a luxury. Dentistry plays a large role in American culture and has evolved extensively since it has begun. Today, the world of dentistry there have been multiple innovations with advancements in diversity, inventions, dental health and diseases. The ADA defines dentistry as “the evaluation,diagnosis, prevention and/or treatment (nonsurgical, surgical or related procedures) of disease, disorders and/or conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and/or the adjacent and associated structures and their impact on the human body” (“ADA Definition of Dentistry”)
To start, dental care has been around since 7000 BC, tools dentist have used have even been found in ancient graveyards all over the world. Creepy! Although, it is speculated drilling could have been a decorative or "replacement of evil spirits." (“The History of Dentistry”) Since dental care wasn’t very popular until the 1700s, underclass citizens were not able to get the proper care they need meaning they decided to hand made tools. Underclass citizens experienced painful dental care since whom did not have the experience or the proper tools. Having access to dental coverage is important, without it everyone is at risk of leaving detrimental oral diseases untreated. There are nearly 82 million people who do not have accessible dental coverage in America (“Repairing the Tattered Safety Net”). Without access to dental providers, individuals are also at risk of…
