Discuss how an organization can benefit from a Total Quality Management program.
An organization can benefit from a Total Quality Management (TQM) program because TQM is focused on meeting the expectations of the customer. Reid and Sanders (2010) define TQM as an integrated effort designed to improve quality performance at every level of the organization. TQM improves business from top to bottom because everyone is working towards a common goal. TQM is also a focused approach to guarantee customer satisfaction which will increase sales as well as increase profits. Again, De Costa and Harrison want to create a product and a process to produce an error free product.
George Chadwick, Director of Marketing, disagrees and argues that production needs to be rapid in order to get a jump start on the competition. Chadwick is concerned about conformance to specifications. If the designers have deemed the product safe then there would be no reason to continue to test the product. In this case, Harrison has already deemed the product safe and Chadwick sees no reason to continue to test as Harrison has requested.
Finally, Jonathan Fine, CEO of Delta Plastics, agrees with Chadwick. Fine agrees that as long as Harrison states that the product is safe “small problems with production should be no big deal,” (Reid and Sanders, 2010). Fine is concerned with fitness for use. He believes that as long as the product is able to perform for its intended use the product should have no problems. It would be assumed, that when problems arise he would act promptly to fix them.
Using one of the quality tools presented in the chapter, analyze the defects in the quality dimensions between the super plastic and standard material.
