The Degradation of Women Throughout Literature Whats the first thing that comes to mind with heroes more importantly who comes to mind. Most people would said Superman, Batman maybe even the Flash . In his 1987 Graphic Novel Watchmen Alan Moore depicts an alternate version of America in 1985. In this alternate timeline ,costumed heroes are an ordinary part of society. Throughout this novel the women are often degraded and demeaned. Though Moore depicts this , this is not the first nor last time this has happened. Throughout the novel, the female characters are often depicted as property and are treated as second class with very minimal rights. Throughout this novel each of the three female characters is brutally murdered. Thus proving that during this time and era that women are inferior. The female characters in Frankenstein are often depicted as passive and submissive," The saintly soul of Elizabeth shone like a shrine-decorated lamp in our peaceful home. Her sympathy was ours; her smile, her soft voice, the sweet glance of her celestial eyes…” (Shelley 45). Victor is often depicted treating Elizabeth as a possession instead of as an equal less than a human being. Victor believes that any compliment and happiness that she gets must derive from his doing. Elizabeth acts very passive around Victor and accepts the fact she is treated as second class citizen and begins to act as such. Victor believes that Elizabeth's happiness should come soley from him . “All praises bestowed on her, I received as made to a possession of my own” (Shelley 44). Victor is attempting to show his dominance and limits who is allowed makes her happy. The novel takes place in a society where men are powerful and women must be obedient. Lord Henry is stating that women have no real intelligence and uses this to belittle and degrade women. This just sets the basis for how women are treated throughout the novel. They are treated as objects and are just decorations for the world based on this description Wilde gives. This also gives us a look in to how the author viewed women in his personal life as Wilde has often stated that the picture of Dorian gray is based loosely on his life. Wilde creates a society where women are just objects. Wilde's The picture of Dorian Gray depicts women as less than equal and they are just objects to to add variety to the everyday world. Throughout the novel females are seen and portrayed as the inferior sex.
