Ambition is a strong desire to achieve something with determination. Many people have different ambitions in life; so the word, ambition, would have different definitions depending on the person. To me, ambition is a burning urge to reach my goals and succeed. Ambition is something that everyone, no matter what age or cultural background, has. It can be a driving force for success or in some cases, a road to failure. Heraclitus said that “big results require big ambitions,” whereas Thomas Merton believes “when ambition ends, happiness begins.” I agree with Salvador Dali who once said, “Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings.” “Big results require big ambitions.” To achieve something great requires dedication, time, energy, and …show more content…
It is often related to characteristics such as greed, ruthlessness, the drive for power, solitary. In the movie Wall Street, Gordon Gecko said that greed was good and that there are no limits to how much money you could make or how big a company could get. He was known as “the man of the people” during that period. Feeling the desire to achieve something greater and wanting more than what he had, he began conquering more of Europe because he was seen as the leading man then. Before long, his empire had grown and he declared himself emperor. Napoleon had become what he tried to destroy and this made the people who once loved him, despise …show more content…
There are goals I wish to achieve in a set period of time. My education is one. I would like to complete high school with high grades and do well on my SATs to have a shot at my dream colleges within two to three years. So time motivates me to achieve my goals. For many others including myself, it is important to keep in mind that success does not happen overnight. I would have to do well freshman year before I do well sophomore year and to do well freshman year I would have to ace my tests. To ace my tests, I have to study. To study, I have to learn. To learn, I have to go to school. Doing well in school takes motivation. Just like a math problem, accomplishments take planning and I’m working backwards. Ambition is the thing that guides me. It provides structure like a graph or table for math
