Define cultural competency in social work practice “Social workers should obtain education about and seek to understand the nature of social diversity and oppression with respect to race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, and mental or physical disability” (NASW Code of Ethics: 1.05 Cultural Competence and Social Diversity. https://socialworkers.org/pubs/code/code.asp). As a social worker it is our responsibility to understand that we live in a country that is culturally diverse. I strongly believe that not one client, we come into contact with is the same; our clients are unique in every way. They come from various ethnic backgrounds and are of different races, sex, sexual orientation, age, and so on. Many of them have different practices and beliefs that we might not agree with but as social workers it is our duty to acknowledge their beliefs and value them. We have to treat every client with respect and dignity regardless of who they are of where they come from. As social workers we need to recognize that a person’s culture, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, beliefs and religion all impact their lives and how they interact. To me, being culturally competent involves being able to accept a person for who they are and learn as much as possible about their culture and beliefs.
