Death In Elie Wiesel's The Book Thief

The theme of The Book Thief is death. I believe that this is the theme because death is reoccurs throughout the whole book. Death is also the narrator of this story. This book took place during the genocide of Jewish people, meaning that all the Jewish people in Germany were being tossed in concentration camps as if they were meaningless and being killed. The story begins with Liesel’s brother’s unfortunate death, later on in the book we find out that her mother also died in a concentration camp. Liesel witnesses many traumatic deaths throughout her life time, she also witnessed her foster parent’s death first hand. As you can see death plays a huge role in this story. Liesel is a big risk taker and that was really rare in that time because she lived in a place where you could have been severely punished for being so. Liesel even goes as far as to steal apples with her best friend Rudy. Liesel was also very bright. Although she couldn’t read or write when she got to her new home, that didn’t stop her from learning every day. Liesel persevered until she eventually learned how to read and write, she even wrote letters to her mother.
