The Effects of a Dead Beat Dad
Dose one agree that the sudden absence of the father has taken an enormous toll on Wingfield family? In “The Glass Menagerie” by Tennessee Williams The father (Mr. Wingfield) is not physically in the play but projected in a huge self-portrait hung over the mantel in the home, introduced by Tom when he says “ This is our Father who left us a long time ago.”(1,1) Mr. William’s has not been seen since his disappearance, and the family has only heard from him once through a post card that displayed only two words “Hello-Goodbye!”(1,1), that alone is enough to send someone into depression. Tom lives daily doing what his father should be at home doing, while tom is off pursing his dreams as a poet and trying to start his own life. Instead Tom is faced with the stress of providing for his mother and sister, forced to work at the continental shoemaker’s warehouse a place which he despises. In Theresa O’ Keefes, “Growing Up Alone: The New Normal of Isolation in Adolescences” She quotes, “Adolescents need guidance and companionship of mature others, who they believe are watching out for them, caring about their wrongdoings,” (O’Keefes) It seems as if Tom never receives that guidance and companionship from his dad. Since Mr. Wingfield just takes off, Tom’s only choice has been to step up and be the man of the family. All this stress has him running off to the movies every night and drinking trying to escape reality, all of this strife is for Mr. Wingfield skipping out on his duties. One night the stress really got to Tom his mom nagging like always told him, “Go, then! Go to the moon-you selfish dreamer!” Selfish! Tom is far from selfish. Just think all Tom has been able to do is dream, But not this night, on this night the load Tom has been carrying get to heavy and he runs off. As a result of Mr. Wingfield leaving his family Tom did as he seen because he did not have a good role model, he followed in his father’s footsteps and left his family. Furthermore the abandonment of Tom’s father really weighed on him the most.
