Who Is Neil Perry

In the long run of the plot, Neil Perry’s father is responsible for the tragedy in the film. In the beginning of the story we see Neil excited to write for the school annual, seeing as how he is chosen to be the assistant editor. However, Neil’s father forbids Neil from writing for the annual, telling his son that he should listen to him until medical school and that Neil should solely focus on his studies. This limits Neil’s choices and decisions early on in the story. The strict restrictions that Neil’s father set on his son made Neil feel trapped enough that he had nowhere to turn and escape to. In the end, the only option to finally become free was suicide, which is exactly what Neil did, killing himself with his father’s pistol. Neil saw no hope in doing what he loved so he took the shot to his brain, ending it all. …show more content…
Neil has to become a doctor so he must achieve the highest marks at school. In order for Neil to accomplish this, Neil’s father is strict on the amount of time he spends on specific activities and that all his attention should be focused on his studies. Mr. Perry acts this way because he never had the amount of opportunities Neil has when he was his age. He might have set up these tight regulations because he wanted nothing but the best for his son. However, by enforcing all these rules and ordering him around, Mr.Perry never leaves Neil to ever properly form his own dreams and ambitions. Neil has to act and think a certain way according to what his father believes is the most successful way, even if it destroys Neil’s resolve and leaves him feeling
