“A Child Called It” by Dave Pelzer, this is hands down one of my favorite books it's extremely well written and includes gruesome details that you don't want to read but you can't put the book down. Dave Pelzer is such a brave man for writing about his horrific abuse, he was forced to eat his own vomit, stabbed, forced to swallow ammonia and clorox all y his mom. But he also mentioned that there was the “good years” he said he was always so comfortable with his mom she always gave him that sense of warmth and safety that every child needs. He was also very close with his dad he was “his hero”.…

David was forced to do chores around the house and was rewarded with left-over food from one of his two brothers, for example his reward might be left over cereal from his baby brother after he finished up cleaning dishes and the mess his brothers made. David was the only child treated like this. School was the only safe haven for David, but even when he arrived to school he was examined and questioned by the school nurse who knew what was really going on. The mother would often send David to school in a ripped, torn and holey shirt that, “looked like Swiss cheese.”…

Art literally saved his life from dissipating through the cracks of the justice system.…

Similarly, the mother from Dave Pelzer’s story, showed how evil she was, when she starved him for 10 days, and laughed when he begged for food, (Pelzer 2). She gave him a plate of food, “but the moment before the food touched my mouth, Mother snatched the plate away from me and emptied the food down the garbage,” (Pelzer 2). In 1970, Toni Morrison published her first novel, The Bluest Eye. Set towards the conclusion of the Great Depression, The Bluest Eye follows a year in the life of 11-year old Pecola Breedlove, seen through the eyes of 9-year old Claudia MacTeer, Pecola’s peer, and an omniscient third party. Pecola longs for love and acceptance that she believes her black ethnicity deprives her of, and believes that “beauty” (blond hair and the “bluest” eyes) will abolish her invisibility in white society. Harboring dark themes such as incest, rape, racism, physical abuse, harassment, and neglect, Morrison’s narrative deviates from typical novels of its day.…
