During the book, Pelzer describes the horrendous games his mother performed on him. For example, Pelzer specifies a couple instances of the abuse including when “Mother held [his arm] in the orange-blue flame”(41) on the stove, “rammed her finger into [his] mouth”(64) to make him throw up the frozen hotdogs he had eaten in starvation, and when “[a] sharp pain erupted from just above [his] stomach”(87) after Mother stabbed him. In attempt to bring attention to the horrors of child abuse, Pelzer demonstrates through his own encounters what it is like to be abused as a child. When reading, a person begins to feel a sadness in them due to the fact a child is being beaten, sometimes almost death. I believe the book has the potential to bring change and thought to children in abusive homes. After reading the book, a person has an inside look at how awful the extent of abuse can be and would want to help make sure another child doesn’t have to journey through the same persecution. Combining sadness and the will to do something to make a difference in the world can facilitate the work of others to help those in need, such as abused children. Subsequently, Dave Pelzer in his novel A Child Called “It” recounts the many excruciating experiences he was involved in while growing up. He does so in effort to bring awareness and, in the future, stop child abuse in the world
