Why is pollution such a dangerous hazard in the United States? Many people today are now realizing how big of an issue pollution is and how to either stop or prevent it. The word pollution is simply defined as, "the action or process of making land, water, air, etc., dirty and not safe or suitable to use" according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. There are several acts that America has taken to fight pollution, but more work still needs to be done. In the United States, pollution has several negative impacts and effects on human health and the environment. The article "Land Pollution" states, "land pollution can result from human activities large and small, from the improper disposal of urban and industrial wastes to individual acts of littering. As urbanization and industrialization have increased, human beings have generated an ever larger array of wastes that promote high levels of land pollution" (Kisseadoo). Not a lot has been done to stop land pollution. Land pollution can 't really be prevented because all of the trash and garbage just goes to landfills. Even if it is burned, the gases from the trash will polluter the air. Garbage often contains dangerous pollutants such as oils, chemicals, and ink. These pollutants from trash can leak into the soil and harm plants, animals, and people. Today in America, communities produce so much garbage that their landfills are filling up, and are running out of places to dump their trash. Sometimes, landfills are not completely sealed off from the land around them. As a result, contaminants and pollutants from the garbage can spread. Pesticides, too, are a major concern to America.
