Most people have an organized story that explains how this grand planet came to be. Whether that story is a random man popping up and creating us and the Earth, then punishing us when we do something wrong, or an invisible entity making the Earth from the back of a turtle is open to interpretation. Whatever the story may be, the similarities and differences are unnerving, to say the least, considering the varying cultures. Most of these creation myths tend to include animals functioning as some part of society, but their purpose depends on the story.…

The two societies Iroquois and Kono are an example of people who use myths to spread a basic understanding of their beliefs and values. While some similarities between the Iroquois and Kono people’s idea of creation parallel each other, there are also some significant differences. The myths that I choose to compare and contrast their major elements are the Ute Creation Myth and the Hawaiian Creation Myth. These two myths are similar but they possess some differences as well. In the creation in the Ute Myth there was a spirit in the sky named “Manitou” alone in the heavens with the clouds, sky, and sun. However, in the beginning of the Hawaiian Myth there was only darkness, from there the night was born as a male creature, meanwhile the female one was the essences of the darkness itself.
