Why Are Creation Myths Important?

A weird feature that we have is the ability to have concepts and ideas and adventures inside our brains that we can’t logically prove (“The Role of Mythology”). I think creation myths have more in common than expected. Although very different, there is always something connecting each myth together. Every culture has different sets of myths on how everything became how it is today. Most speak of a powerful essence with mighty powers beyond what humanity could ever dream of doing. These myths carried from generation to generation, each time changing slightly (“Creation Myths of Civilizations”). In Greek myths there god's creating and shaping our world. In Norse myths, there is fire and ice and giants. In American Indian myths, there are animals …show more content…
Then the Earth came from the nothingness. The Earth gave birth to the sky. Then she married him and they had many children. Their children overthrew the sky and ruled the world. Soon they had children who overthrew them. They are known the gods. The gods have lots of misunderstandings and are very flawed. Hades kidnapped somebody, Zeus chained a titan to a mountain, Athena made a human spider after she got mad at a mortal. The Norse myths are very complex. There are many gods and goddesses and many giants too. They all play a part in how our world formed, but the main focus of Norse myths isn’t on how we came to Earth. Instead, it focuses on gods and goddesses like Loki, Thor, Freya, and Odin. They were a few of many astonishing gods in the Norse myths. Before the Vikings became Christians, they believed in these gods and had an elaborate and complicated native religion (McCoy).

Almost nothing is known about the Vikings religious practice’s although many religious scholars believe that the chieftains had roles similar to priest along with their normal leadership roles. It is also believed that pagan worship involved the sacrifice of horses, but know other animal sacrifice is known. However, we do know that when the Viking people converted from paganism to Christianity the pagan gods they previously worshiped did not disappear. The myths that I choose to compare and contrast their major elements are the Ute Creation Myth and the Hawaiian Creation Myth. These two myths are similar but they possess some differences as well. In the creation in the Ute Myth there was a spirit in the sky named “Manitou” alone in the heavens with the clouds, sky, and sun. However, in the beginning of the Hawaiian Myth there was only darkness, from there the night was born as a male creature, meanwhile the female one was the essences of the darkness itself. But, both tales the way that things came into the world have a similar order, the creation stared with plants which surrounded the earth, the fishes, birds, and lastly animals.…

There is a difference between religion and mythology. Religion is a set of practices based on the belief of non-human beings monitoring actions and myths are stories that matter within a specific community or communities. There are two kinds of religion, evolutionary and revealed. The Greeks had an evolutionary religion where the totality of things were feared by a social group and had no specific origin. Myth can be divided into three categories, the first being divine, which explains the stories about the gods and the creation of the universe and how the universe is supposed to work.…
