The Novel ‘To Kill A Mocking bird’ by Harper Lee, displays main significant themes, one of these being courage, which is the ability to do what frightens one. Harper Lee uses many character through the novel to show the difference between true and false courage. Harper Lee shows courage through the character Atticus Finch, Arthur Radley, Tom Robinson and Mrs Dubose. Firstly Atticus gives up his social reputation to defend Tom Robinson in court, furthermore, Arthur Radley faces his fears and social anxiety, in addition, Tom Robinson went against a white man’s word to defend himself and Lastly, Mrs Dubose beats addiction and endures great physical pain at an old age. Harper Lee uses these character to represent true courage in to kill a mocking bird.

Tom went against a white man’s word in a court of law knowing the chance he had, this is shown when Tom is asked if he committed the crime and says “I did not, suh.” Tom is shown courageous not only for this but because he helped a white woman which went against social norms, tom said he did it saying “I felt right sorry for her.” He additionally shows courage by speaking up in court because anything he said was not taken into account compared to a white man. Tom could have taken the easily way out and pleaded guilty and end up with a couple of years in prison but he presents true courage as he fights for what is right by telling the truth, regardless of the consequences. Harper Lee uses Tom to demonstrate how sticking up for oneself and standing by the truth is true courage. Tom shows how even though you may lose you are still courageous.
