Counselling Session Analysis

Being able to reflect and critically evaluate the outcome of the session plays an important part in improving the skills of the counsellor both in the session and outside of the session, planning better sessions providing the best service to the client.

For the first half of this role play, I experienced the same problem similar to the one during the trial role play which is not listening to the client. I was trying to ask my questions in accordance to the script which resulted in me not actively listening to the client when she did not follow the script which brings me to the next point of not enough summarising and reflection of feelings.

I was aware of what is happening within me, and tried to focus on what the client is talking but due

So, I am just curious, what does your family members mean to you?” Maybe by phrasing it in this manner it can help ease the transition between the stages.

There was one point in time when the client talks for quite a long period of time (line 18-22) and I think I could have interrupted her at line 20 and told her to focus on how she places her expectation on herself before she continues to talk about how she copes previously as I think it would be more important for her to know and be aware and reflect on how setting expectations on herself is affecting her ability to cope in this situation rather than knowing her old coping skills.

As for the empathetic challenge (line 17), I think I had done it too early in the session and even if I wanted to, I could have summarise before the empathetic challenge. I could have, instead asked a meaning question on how her family mean to her as she is willing to maintain it at her own expense or I could have stayed and focus on how she sets up the expectation to take on everything on herself which could be more beneficial to the client as she reflects rather than empathetically challenging her this early in the session without sufficient information and

Reflective listening can be considered a key concept when it comes to the profession of case management. Summers states that “listening to another person in a way that indicates our concern for that person is important in the healing process” (pg. 154). Clients want to be able to express their concerns and issues to a professional that will listen to what is being said and respond in a helpful manner. Summers (2013) explains that the three purposes of reflective listening are to “let clients know you have heard their concerns…create an opportunity for you to correct any misperceptions… [and to] illustrate your acceptance of where the client is at that moment” (pg. 154).…

Role Play Reflection The goal of this role play was to practice completing an assessment on a family, while using motivational interviewing. Since my group only had two people, our role play consisted of a social worker and a student, who was exhibiting behavioral problems in school. By using the motivational interviewing technique, our goal as a social worker is to get the client to say things and to help them come to the decision of change.…

In this role play, the counselor did a great job probing the client for more information and details in order to develop a deeper understanding of what the client was saying and meant. Anytime the client was vague or even unclear,it allowed the counselor to seek a better understanding by simply asking questions such as “what exactly did you mean by your boss is only harshly demanding of you at work” or “could you tell me more about the situation”, in order for the counselor to gain clarification of what the client meant or was saying at the time. In this role play the counselor also did a good job demonstrating acceptance, maintaining eye contact and an upright posture, responding to the client with alertness and facial animation, and asking…

There are many different techniques, methods of delivery that counsellors can use, there are then many different clients and topics that as counsellor may face or specialise in during their careers in the counselling sector (Horvath 2005). A vital part of all counselling sessions is the relationship between the client and the counsellor, while this is known as the therapeutic alliance, the way of working with the client, the more specific therapeutic relationship is a relationship that has been shown to be instrumental of successful outcomes for the clients (Clarkson, 1947,1995). The difference in a therapeutic relationship is that it is based on empathy, congruence, unconditional positive regard towards the client from the counsellor. This is something that needs to be part of the counsellor’s interactions, to not only support clients but also improve themselves as a counselling counsellor (Horvath 2005), (Tryon & Winograd, 2001).…

As a top student I really achieve in school but the same cannot be said about others. A lot of my friends struggle with many school subjects. I felt bad and wanted them to achieve like me. So I decided to take it upon myself to tutor them. As a peer from their class it is easier for them to learn that to a tutoring session from a teacher.…

The purpose of this paper is to describe the counselling process, a process that consists of six different stages (or steps), and the impact each stage has on the outcome of therapy. The counselling process can be seen as a helping process that classically involves a counsellor (or another specifically trained professional) and a client working together to identify sources of problems or concerns that the client is undergoing. The counsellor and the client work collaboratively to develop ways to deal with and overcome these problems so that the client gains a new ability to understand him/herself and…

For the first time, my client began to cry. I had no idea how to handle this situation because I naturally am a reserved person and do not naturally show emotion. So, when my client began to cry, I was shocked for a second and tried to recover by saying “I see this is very upsetting for you.” At the time, I thought it was enough to just say that and then try to move on so the client would stop crying. After reviewing the role play, I wished I would have allowed more time for my client to release these emotions and maybe use silence as a way for the client to decide what she is comfortable with saying next.…

This week’s tutoring session required me to work with a third grade girl. She needed help on her spelling words, because she had an upcoming spelling test that week. We started going over the spelling words, but she was taking a long time to answer me. The next alternative we chose to do was I call them out to her and she writes them on a paper.…

    6. The five guidelines for asking good questions are (a) asked open-end questions, (b) question should not sound prefabricated, (c) questions should be horizontal and vertical, (d) question should focus on the client, not others, and (e) avoid asking “Why” questions. 7. The first phase should end with an invitation to the client to identify her or his concerns. This is important because it let the client know that we are transitioning into the counseling…

Because as I thought I learned everything in the classroom, this role play proved me wrong. There is never a thing such “I already learned everything I needed to” because the truth is wherever you go you learn different things, and the funny thing is all of them are relevant for practice. Indeed, I learned from the scenario that I would encounter different patients in real life, also from the feedback given by the client, I learned how he perceived me and on what areas I need to improve. Then, something I would never think of mentioning is that style in how you practice does really make a difference. Client pointed out that because I was someone who looked at him in the eyes, treated him no less than anybody, was empathetic and used a little bit of humor, he would not have talk to me like he did at the end; he mentioned that he would probably be still quiet and serious leaving a huge gap of…

We should have gone over them together, making sure that the client understood, that if need be the courts could subpoena her records, so she should only share what she felt comfortable telling. I feel that I came off as genuine, and we established an instant rapport. I engaged my client, I asked her what brought her there. My client went on to inform me that she had recently lost her job. Afterwards she paused briefly.…

While reflecting over this meeting, I think some very good points surrounding supervision, competencies, and self-awareness was discussed. Countertransference does not just have to be about traumatic experiences the counsellor has endured, but rather any positive or negative thoughts or emotions and/or biased expressions that occur due to the recitation of the client’s story (Briere & Scott, 2015). I also think that supervision is a key component in all counselling, as it is hard to be self-aware to the point of eliminating any blind spots that may exist. Sometimes outside observations of our behaviors can help illuminate even a small blind spot the counsellor may have toward themselves; these observations may be from a supervisor, or as you…

This occurs when dependency has developed. In cases where progress is not being made and goals are not being met you must discuss with your supervisor what to do next. If the goals aren’t met it might be because the counsellor does not have the appropriate skills or that a new approach is needed to help the client. If dependency has been identified it should be discussed not hidden. This is a sensitive topic as you risk the client feeling rejected.…

These issues will resurface when a client’s personal situation hits a nerve. When this happens the counselor tends to focus more on what he/ she is experiencing instead of what the client is dealing with. Because effective counseling require that we give the client our full focus, we need to find creative ways to deal with those issues and maintain focus throughout our sessions. This will never be easy because we are humans, but taking steps early in this program will help us when we get to the beginning of our…

It is in this session that I helped the client to focus on the wider issues around the problem. This I achieved through challenging the client positively by asking him if he thought whether the situation would still have ended the same way it was if he did things differently. I also inquired whether he thought there were reasons that made the individual behave the way she did. These questions also allowed my client to express his emotions regarding the situation which would be helpful for him since he would be able to release the tension he had concerning the situations. This was through talking about the thoughts and the feelings he had stored in his mind.…
