When asked about the cost of school lunch, any growing family with little ones in school will most likely express that they feel that school lunches are overpriced and have little nutritional value for our children. According to Lewiston, Maine school district, on average a week of elementary school lunches costs roughly eleven dollars and for intermediate and high school students it is approximately twelve dollars a week. According to Orange County public school district, on average a week of elementary school lunches costs approximately nine dollars and for middle school and high school students at Orange County its thirteen dollars roughly. Clint, Slisbury touches this vending machine issues a little in his article, “Make an Investment in Our School Children: Increase the Nutritional Value of School Lunch Programs.” Becker and Burros state, “Vending machines provide money for 98 percent of public high schools, 74 percent of middle schools and 43 percent of elementary schools” (qtd by Slisbury 340). Giving schools another great reason why to be so apprehensive of this new vending machine theory. Schools are overly concerned that if given the option for healthy food or junk food a lot of older children would choose the junk food any day over healthy food. As a result of them being raised to thinking that eating poorly and not exercising is acceptable.
