In 2012, more than 236,000 cosmetic surgeries have been performed on teens between the age of 13 through 19 (Zuckerman). Plastic surgery is defined as a special type of surgery that alters, repairs, or reconstructs a person’s physical defects or features (Joseph and Pierre 60). Plastic or cosmetic surgery has gone back as far as 2000 B.C. in India and Egypt. Around the first century B.C., Roman physicians practiced early surgical methods to alter one’s body (Salcido). The Amount of people having surgeries is on the rise. In 2002 – 2003 the amount of plastic surgeries has tripled from 3,872 to 11, 326 (Joseph and Pierre). Teens should not be able to alter their bodies through the form of cosmetic surgery due to the effects on the body, impacts on the mind, impacts of social media and the impractical price.
Cosmetic surgery is known for having many negative effects on the body. -For teens, Breast implants are one of the most wanted surgeries. However, it also comes with a lot of risk. According to Sabrina Joseph and Khorally Pierre, some complications that accompany breast implants are infection, leakage and break can cause the solution in the implant to be absorbed into the blood stream and it can cause an infection in the blood, Capsular Contractive defined as the Immune system rejects the implant, Necurosis which may be defined as the tissue surrounding implant dying.
