At first, Squeaky is very protective, serious and most of all doesn’t let Raymond do what he wants to. She takes control of everything he does. As the story progresses, Squeaky starts to let her walls down, become her true self and Raymond starts to form into his own person. What makes her let her guard down of Raymond is when Squeaky grasps “I’ve got a roomful of ribbons and awards. But what does Raymond got to call his own?” Once Squeaky allows Raymond to become his own person, she realized how great of a runner he really is and on the other hand when Squeaky becomes her true self, she understands how nice everyone could be. After Squeaky wins the race, Gretchen walks over to her. The text states: “And she nods and congratulates me and then she smiles. And I smile. We stand there with this big smile of respect between us.” this shows Squeaky becomes her own person as well as Raymond. In total, the author is showing the reader how important and meaningful it is to be your own
