After World War II, the United States and Soviet Union stood face to face. Capitalism, democracy, and freedom of expressions were against communism, dictatorship, and limited freedoms. Soviets wanted to enlarge. George Kennan was a US foreign service agent in Moscow, he suggested containment. Containment is the idea that the Soviet Union and Soviet Communism should not be allowed to spread. These three events clearly demonstrate the US's policy of Containment, the Berlin Airlift/ Blockade, Korean War, and The Cuban Missile Crisis. One example of Containment was the Berlin Airlift. June 1948 to May 1949 Stalin chose to stop all shipments in and out of West Berlin. (Doc B, map) This was very bad because the Berlin Airlift supplied West Berlin with food and fuel so citizens could survive the Soviet imposed Berlin Blockade.US, England and France carried out an airlift for almost a year, this broke the blockade. Flew in 270,000 planeloads of supplies from food to coal. Korea was divided into two parts, a communist North assisted by the Soviet Union, and a non-communist South assisted by the United States. In November of 1950, communist North Korea attack South Korea, an American ally. US joined to drive North Korea back. North Korea supported China and Soviet Union.
