“War is hell.” If this is the case then what would nuclear war be. Wars can go on for years with million of deaths but nuclear war can last a few hours and kill billions. The short story “let there come soft Rains” depicts a future after the events of a nuclear war, more specifically it tells the story of a single house standing in the rubble of a city. I found this story interesting as it gave me a look into the minds of those who knew of the destructive capabilities of nuclear weapons during wartime. This to me shows that even though people had their fears of these weapons they also had the hope that the end is near. However this also shows their fear for the far future their doubt that absolute peace could not be achieved. One description within the book, I believe, sums up why there was so much fear for the weapons. The description is of one of the wall of the house, the wall which faces the site of the bomb, the wall is completely black where the wall has been burnt except for five silhouettes where the wall wasn't burnt. The first silhouette is of man mowing the now dead lawn, the second of a woman, gardening. The next three show a scene of two children playing with a ball frozen mid air. How the silhouette of the ball was in misthrow between the children was the last thing that was revealed which had the most impact on the description. This single ball frozen mid air is used to emphasize on how instantiations everything is during the detonation of the bomb. Due to the impact this scene had on me I feel it would have had a similar impact on others which leads me to believe this is what the most fear is concerning nuclear weapons. This book was not intended to be a prediction of the future but instead a projection of the fears of
