A colostomy is a surgical procedure in which part of the colon is attached to the front of the abdomen (abdominal wall). The colon is the last part of the digestive tract. It is where water is absorbed from digested food to form stool (feces). A colostomy is done to redirect stool through an opening (stoma) in the abdominal wall.
You may need this surgery if you have a medical condition that prevents stool from leaving your body through the usual opening (rectum). A bag will be attached to the stoma on the outside of your body. This bag will collect the stool and waste that is redirected through the stoma. A colostomy may be temporary or permanent.

• A drainage tube may be placed through your nose and into your stomach (nasogastric tube).
• You will be given a medicine to make you fall asleep (general anesthetic).
• An incision will be made in the front of your abdomen.
• The muscles under the skin will be divided or separated.
• The next steps will vary depending on the type of colostomy. The two main types are:
○ End colostomy. Part of the colon will be removed, or the colon will be divided into two separate parts. The end of the colon that is attached to the upper part of the digestive tract will be attached to the wall of the abdomen, creating a stoma. The other end will be closed off.
○ Loop colostomy. A part of the colon will be pulled through the incision in the abdomen. Two openings will be made in the side of the colon. The colon will be attached to the skin at these openings, creating the stoma.
• Stitches (sutures) will be used to create the stoma and close the incision.
• A colostomy bag will be placed over the stoma to collect stool and mucus.
The procedure may vary among health care providers and hospitals.
