Leon Festinger is the founder of this theory and will be introduced as he is the primary source, following is a subtitle of research other scholars has done within this area, to add diversity to these findings there is added some scholars that criticized the theory towards the end. Festinger is most likely best known for his discoveries and research within the field of attitude behavior for the cognitive dissonance theory (Festinger, L., 1957). According to Festinger’s studies is cognitive dissonance concerned with relations between cognitions. This cognition is any beliefs, opionions, attitudes or knowledge about anything. He believes that the reason for arousal of dissonance can be powerful enough to change attitudes, it must be persuaded by an indirect approach thorugh the subtle induction of self-persuasion. (Aronson, E. 2003). With an indirect approach the target doesn’t feel attacked with arguments and have the option of resistance as a defense. With dissonance Aronson believes that the target persuade himself by justifying an action or a statement made under conditions of limited justification. In the end the target will believe in the self-justification made. Three years after Leon Festingers book: A theory of cognitive dissonance was published, Aronson was looking to develop an extension about prediction in the theory. He started researching for evolving, and suggested that dissonance theory makes its trongest and clearest predictions when the self-concept of the individual is engaged (Aronson, 1960).
