Cognitive Behavioral Therapy In Susan Knell's Play Therapy

Play therapy is a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy; this technique is typically used for children. It is a therapeutic approach that engages the child in therapy sessions through play. Although play therapy is typically used on children studies show that it can be affective for all ages. Play therapy was introduced in the 1990’s by Susan Knell. Susan Knell originally used the traditional Cognitive Behavioral techniques with clients, she found that by adding toys such as puppets, sandboxes, and art it allowed for a better interaction and counseling of young children. (Knell. S.M, 1998)
According to The British Association of Play Therapist, Play therapy has three important components; actualization, the need for positive regard, and play as communication. Actualization in play therapy is displayed acting out real life problems in a creative way. The need for positive regard children often feel the need to be respected and need attention, the therapist provides this during therapy as the intuitively watch the child play and provide comfort while doing so. Play as communication, through the play children communicate various things that they may not have the words for. Play therapy is a great technique to use to help understand how the child conceptualizes the world that they live in, it also allows for the child to display the maltreatment that was a part of their lives. The influence of religion affects the child deeply and children that are in the environment may not understand that these behaviors are of parents are incorrect. Often times religions have “cult-like” behavior, and children are not able to understand how religious maltreatment is
