Question 1: Describe the current issue that you are going to analyze. Explain the logic of your comparison. For example, are you comparing content in similar articles across different cities within the same newspaper chain? Two articles “Delta goes to court to close marijuana shop” published by two newspaper titles The Leader and Delta Optimist report on the controversial issue regarding the legalization of marijuana. In this case, about B.C. Supreme Court ordering a marijuana shop in Delta shut down. Think back to Fairclough: Is your word a ‘text’ or a ‘discourse’? Explain. The different use of verb in two articles indicates a larger discourse on the issue regarding the legalization of marijuana. When two articles describe the Delta council’s investigation of the WeeMedical Dispensary Society, they use different verbs to provoke different impressions about the dispensary store. The Leader describes that the RCMP have “raided” the WeeMedical store. The word “raided” not only emphasizes the RCMP’s authority, it also projects the store as a hostile entity that is against the government institution. However, the Delta Optimist reports that the dispensary was “slapped” with a permanent statutory injunction. The use of metaphor and passive voice reflects that the dispensary is being targeted by the government. Apparently, the different use of verbs by two presses provokes different impressions about the dispensary store. The Leader portrays the WeeMedical dispensary as the lawbreaker, whereas the Delta Optimist describes the dispensary as the victim in the …show more content…
Two articles purposely use different type of texts and references to show their attitudes toward the issue. While the Leader is speaking against by negative verbs, the Delta Optimist takes on a moderate side. By filtering certain messages and prevailing other ideas, two articles create a discourse that communicate to the audiences about their ideologies. In fact, the issue regarding the legalization of marijuana is a power-relevant discourse that involves the reconstruction of the social and cognitive processes (Van Dijk, 2011). It shows Van Dijk’s idea that social cognition is the necessary interface between discourse and dominance.
