The African- American struggle for equal rights began when the civil war ended. Slavery was outlawed in the deep south Jim Crow laws segregated whites and African- Americans. In the early 1900’s w.e.b Dubois and others created the National Association for the advancement of colored people or then- double a.c.p. The goal of the n-double a.c.p was to challenge racist laws in court. This brought many important civil right cases to the supreme court. Parks boarded a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, and refused to give up her seat to a white man because the “whites only” seating area was full. Her subsequent arrest led Martin Luther King Jr. to organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott of public transport, which lasted for over a year. Due to the boycott, the Supreme Court ruled that segregation on public transport was unconstitutional and the bus boycott finally ended. These important events began a peaceful movement that aimed to end unequal treatment for African Americans. Dr. King was a leading force in that movement. On August 28, 1963, King led 250,000 civil rights activist in the march on Washington DC. at the end of the march, King delivered one of his most celebrated speeches “I have a dream” In 1964 he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his civil rights work, the youngest person to receive the prize.
