Cinnamon and Diabetes
Diabetes is a group of disorders specified by increased glucose levels in the blood due to problems in the secretion of insulin or the action of insulin in the body. Eyes, heart, kidneys and blood vessels are some of the organs which can be affected by chronic hyperglycemia in diabetes.(Association 2014)
Type 1 diabetes also known as insulin-dependent diabetes is the type of diabetes in which the body produces deficient amounts of insulin. People who have type 1 diabetes administrate insulin daily in their body to regulate their blood glucose levels. The symptoms are increased urination and thirst, loss of weight, increased hunger fatigue and vision problems. Type 2 diabetes also known as non insulin dependent diabetes

There are many species of cinnamon available but the Cinnamomum zeylanicum is used in extensive research for diabetes. It has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antitumor, cardiovascular, cholesterol-lowering, and immune-modulatory effects. (Bandara, Uluwaduge et al. 2012)
Ethnicity, family history of diabetes, along with older age, overweight and obesity, excessive weight gain during pregnancy, unhealthy diet, a history of stillbirth, excess glucose in urine during pregnancy physical inactivity and smoking all increase the risk of diabetes in a person. High intake of sugary drinks may increase the obesity among children which may also lead to diabetes. Childhood nutrition plays a vital role in the risk of diabetes.(Fowler 2010)
Complications develop if the diabetes of a person is not well managed. These complications may cause problems for our health. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a condition which is triggered by abnormally high levels of blood glucose. It may lead to coma too. When the blood glucose level is abnormally low it can cause seizures and unconsciousness. It can be due to heavy exercising, skipping a meal or even taking a high dose of anti diabetic medication. In obese persons, it is observed that insulin resistance results in increased fasting and random glucose and insulin levels. The objective of the study was to ascertain the comparative data in decline in random sugar response in normal weight as well as healthy/ obese persons after taking 6 g of ground cinnamon. In this study persons consumed 50 grams of carbohydrates in instant cereals with 6 gram ground cinnamon. The blood glucose levels in the main results were taken at minutes 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. Thirty people between the ages of 18 – 30 years out of which 15 with BMI between 18.5 – 24.9 and 15 with BMI of 30 or greater completed the overall study. However, during the combined analysis of all test subjects the addition of ground cinnamon in their cereals drastically reduced 120-minute sugar level. It was observed that at 120 minutes the blood sugar was considerably higher with the cinnamon consumption. The test result suggests that cinnamon may be very effective in reducing random blood sugar levels response in both i.e. obese and normal weight persons. (Magistrelli and Chezem
