The Choctaw were part of “The Five Civilized Tribes”. This name was used by the white settlers to refer to the Creek, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Seminole and Choctaw tribes of the Southeast. These five tribes were early converts to Christianity. They were probably called this because the members of the tribes were mostly farmers and because they lived in settled towns with government systems which Europeans and early Americans considered advanced.

A unique thing about the Choctaw is the way that they dressed. Men would wear breechcloths and women would wear deerskin or woven fiber, wraparound skirts. Shirts were not necessary to wear, but men and women would typically wear poncho style capes in cool weather. Men and women would also have long hair. Some men would wear a Mohawk while decorating the fringe with bright colors and feathers. During battles, games, and festivals, men would also paint their bodies and faces with bright colored paint.
7) Write a paragraph explaining how and why the environment impacted the way your tribe lived. The environment affected the Choctaw tribe in many ways. First, Oklahoma land was great for farming so naturally the Choctaw became farmers which made them have to grow and eat certain foods. Also, many Choctaw would settle their houses in cornfields. They had to make their houses from certain materials they had available to them such as river cane. The Choctaw would also empty out tree longs and use them as canoes for fishing trips. The environment allowed the Choctaw to develop and flourish, becoming a
