Okonkwo’s relationship and as a father figure with Ezinma, Ikemefuna, and Nwoye in the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe was complex. The individual connection that Okonkwo had with each of his children had extreme high and lows during the novel.

Ezinma was the only child of Okonkwo and his second wife Ekwefi. She was his favorite daughter. She was also the only child out of ten children that Ekwefi had that made it past three years old. Okonkwo was very fond of her but only very rarely showed it openly. Okonkwo wishes that Enzinma was a boy due to her masculine spirit. “You have not eaten for two days, said his daughter Ezinma when she brought the food to him. So you must finish this. She sat down and stretched her legs in front of her. Okonkwo ate the food absent-mindedly. She should have been a boy” (p.63-64). One day Ezinma became very ill and when Ekwefi told Okonkwo about her condition, he immediately sprang into action to gather herbs for her which he tossed the herbs onto a pot of boiling water and streamed them. After this incident, Chielo the priestess of Agbala came over to the compound and wanted to take Ezinma to perform a ritual by walking to all of the villages then back to the caves. Okonkwo felt anxious but he didn’t show it. He went to the caves to wait for Ezinma but only on his fourth trip going back and forth he found Ekwefi waiting there and during that time he became very worried.
