Did Okonkwo’s actions help him or did his actions hinder him? I can say that his actions had consequences for these reasons: He killed someone after he was told not to, Accidentally shot someone and was punished, White missionaries drove Okonkwo to commit suicide.
Ikemefuna was from a different village than Okonkwo but one day Ikemefuna’s family was punished for doing something horrific. The punishment was that the boy shall live with another family from a different village, so Ikemefuna was sent to Okonkwo. Okonkwo adopted him. Ikemefuna calls Okonkwo dad because it’s been three years since Ikemefuna moved into Okonkwo’s household. Agbala the oracle of the hills would tell people how their future would turn out. However Agbala said that the boy Ikemefuna must die. Ogbuefi Ezeudu the oldest man in the village told Okonkwo that they were going to kill his adopted son Ikemefuna and Ogbuefi Ezeudu’s opinion for Okonkwo was to not get involved because the boy called him

Okonkwo's gun accidentally fired and part of the medal on the gun flew off. Which lead to the death of Ogbuefi Ezeudu’s youngest son’s death. “It was a crime against the earth goddess to kill a clansman, and a man who committed it must be flee from the land.” Okonkwo was the one who committed the crime. Even though the crime was accidentally he was punished. He was banished for seven years because that is the law of the tribe. During his banishment he went to Mbanta his mother's land. Uchendu his uncle took Okonkwo's and his family in. Obierika and the rest of Umuofia had to burn and destroy everything Okonkwo had there and all of his yams and they did. In Okonkwo’s new village where he shall live for seven years was good when he arrived because his uncle gave him a few yams as for some of the people in Mbanta to start his harvest.
