Without their support I do not believe that Adeline would have succeeded because she would have no one to give her guidance or advice. Adeline submitted her play ”Gone With the Locusts” because of Ye Ye’s inspirational words, ”It was announced today that 14-year-old Hong Kong schoolgirl Adeline Jun-Ling Yen of Sacred Heart Canossian School, Caine Road, Hong Kong, has won first place in the International Play-writing Competition held in London, England, for the 1951-1952 school year. Our sincere congratulations, Adeline, for bringing honor to Hong Kong” (191). This is what gets Father’s attention and eventually her acceptance into college in England. Ye Ye and Aunt Baba’s words helped to steer Adeline in the right direction in life and in her academics. Adeline’s singular goal in her time at Hong Kong was to make it to college in England, and when this happened, it showed that all of her hard work payed off, ”You will go to England with Third Brother this summer and you will go to medical school” (193). This moment was why Adeline studied so hard in academics and she felt overjoyed after hearing the news. Aunt Baba and Ye Ye’s support throughout Adeline’s childhood payed off because Adeline had reached the goal that she had been working toward her whole life.
