In life, Suyuan Woo’s past has been unimaginable, however through all her life struggles she has somehow remained hopeful. Back in China, Suyuan had made a life for herself, she was married and even had twin baby girls. However, things changed when she realized that the Japanese were invading. If she didn't flee she would be killed. She left China with what she could carry, a wheelbarrow, and her babies. Just as she started a Joy Luck Club in China she did the same in America. The Joy Luck Club was put together as a way of celebrating the women's happiness despite whatever they may be going through. It can be seen that even throughout Suyuan's younger ages she has always had a big heart and this follows her through each stage of her life. She displays her ambitious qualities from the start of the novel to the end, and I feel that this really helped to develop her character. It also gave more meaning to the book. Suyuan says that “But to despair was to wish back for something already lost”.
