China in many centuries regarded itself as self-sufficient and a country that is more superior than other countries. China is a feudal society where it does not associate nor trade with other countries; therefore, this isolation with the outside world indirectly led to fail of the Qing Dynasty. China is transition from a traditional society to a modern one and transformation from the Kuomingdang to the Communism; where under Chairman Mao Zedong’s ruling, people have to get rid of the old and welcome the new. During the time of the Chinese Civil War, Kuomingdang or the Nationalist and Chinese Communist Party battle one another although they were all Chinese. “The Chinese Civil War of 1945-1949 continued a struggle that had begun in 1927, when the Chinese government under the leadership of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek and his ruling Nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) Party tried to exterminate the Chinese Communist Party” (“Chinese Civil War”). Furthermore, the Chinese Cultural Revolution is considered as the retrogression of Chinese civilization. In the entire history of China, people including the Emperors have always respected the intellectuals; however, during the Cultural Revolution, all the intellectuals have now been labeled as the counterrevolutionaries. In the films To Live and Farewell My Concubine, they have shown the fortunes and misfortunes of the people living in the period of the Cultural Revolution and they have also shown how the protagonists in each film’s lives…
