Article Review: Children's Belief in Santa Clause
Introduction: From simply experiencing day to day life, an infant can glean much information about the world at large. They are able to understand complex concepts such as gravity, time, and space without even knowing their names. As children, we quickly learn all of these ideas, and they become an integral part of our belief system. Research done by Shtulman and Yoo (2015) explored children’s understanding of the physically possible and its constraints on their belief in Santa Claus. The article references prior research by Mills (2013) indicating that children evaluate testimonies through both the source and the content. Despite such scrutiny from the children, they still believe the false tale. The question of belief despite obvious contradictions in children can apply to many topics. The research can serve as a basis for a further look into a child's belief in a higher power. It can also be used to explore the extent of a child's naivete. The introduction also discusses the difficulty young children between the ages of 3 to 8 have with distinguishing impossible and implausible events. The task where the children asked Santa questions was the closest way to simulate skepticism without the unintended consequences. The study clearly had its limitations. It did not assess changes in testimonies each child heard about Santa or the how strongly the story was reinforced in the household. It did not study children that had passed into disbelief and the change in mentality. For further information, parents should be interviewed as well. They can answer simple question about how they promote the belief in Santa Clause and any special activities they do regarding
