American children between 8 and 18 years of age spend an average of 6 hours and 21 minutes each day using entertainment media (VITM). Children spend a lot of time on media a day; on twitter, listening to music, watching TV and playing video games. The major concern among people is how do children respond to watching violence in the media. It has become impossible to escape the violence. By 18 years of age, the average young person will have viewed an estimated 200,000 acts of violence on television alone (VITM). Violence appears in movies, TV show, music, social media and even some kid shows. The new question is, how does this affect the children that are experiencing violence through media? Children who view acts of violence through the media become more violent than those who have not viewed violence.
Children who view violence through a TV screen are negatively affected by what they watch. They become more aggressive and less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others. According to research by “L. Rowell Huesmann, Leonard Eron and others indicated that starting in the 1980s found that children who watched many hours of violence on television when they were in elementary school tended to show higher levels of aggressive behavior when they became teenagers”(VITM). This research indicates the link between viewing violence at a young age and later behavior as a teenager. Current children’s show are getting more violent and upsetting.
