A Supersized Situation
Childhood obesity can be reversed with educating parents, offering nutritious school lunches and healthier options by manufacturers. Obesity is a growing problem in this country which trickles down to our children. The CDC reports “approximately 4.7 million, or 11% of youths 6-17 years are seriously overweight.” This statistic demonstrates why we need to tackle this issue head on and prevent this lifestyle from continuing into adulthood.
The financial costs on a family of a child who is obese can be staggering. This includes everything from replenishing clothes and food along with medical costs. A child could develop diabetes and need numerous medications and regular checkups with their doctor. This depletes the family’s resources and could cause resentment.
If a school provides nutritious and healthy options, then a child could go home and pass that education off to their parent. Schools have a great impact on assisting parents to make better choices and could lead the way in reversing this unhealthy trend. Offering a nutrition class for parents and their children could be a great way to bond over starting a healthy lifestyle for the whole family. One great step forward is the HealthierUS School Challenge: Smarter Lunchrooms a voluntary program that promotes nutrition and getting kids physically active. “To this date, HUSSC:LS awards have been given to schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia”.
